Taliban is a Sunni (more precisely, Deobandi) fundamentalist political and military group now in power in Afghanistan. The term “Taliban” means “students” and points to its origins as a social movement of students from madrassas – religious schools. The movement that the international community used to see as a terrorist came to power in 2021 after American troops had withdrawn from Afghanistan. Maybe this is why there are many conspiracy theories about it now.
